You Can Free Yourself

From Gynecomastia

Approximately 15% of American men suffer from some form of enlarged breasts. Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that helps these men restore their confidence with a more contoured chest by removing the breast gland and excess breast tissues.

Clareo Centers for Aesthetic Surgery is a Boston aesthetic surgery center that places the utmost importance on quality, safety, and service. At Clareo, Dr. Michael Tantillo works directly with each patient to come up with a personalized plan to reduce the size of male breasts and pronounced nipples with gynecomastia surgery.

What Causes Enlarged Male Breasts (Gynecomastia)?

Gynecomastia is classified into two forms: pseudo gynecomastia and true gynecomastia. Pseudo gynecomastia is storing excess fat tissue in the breasts, causing breasts and/or nipples to enlarge.

True gynecomastia is enlarged breast tissue which is most often physiologic (a variation of normal) but occasionally can be due to hormone imbalances, prescription medication, steroid use, or marijuana use. In other words, sometimes there’s a reason. Sometimes it just happens. Despite consistent exercise and weight control, these men's breasts don't look the way they want them to.

Many times Dr. Tantillo removes breast tissue and performs liposuction of the surrounding area to get the chest as flat as possible and optimize muscle definition. During your consultation, Dr. Tantillo will examine your chest and help you determine what surgical techniques might work for your particular situation.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that combines liposuction, tissue removal, and occasionally skin removal in order to flatten the chest and eliminate the symptoms of gynecomastia. Benefits include:

  • Reducing large breasts and pronounced nipples
  • A flatter, more athletic-looking chest
  • No more hiding male breasts under layers or taping your chest
  • Confidence at the gym, pool, work, social events, and while jogging
  • No more embarrassment about chest size
  • Permanent results when you maintain a healthy weight
  • Improving your look when in t-shirts, dress shirts, sweaters, and bare-chested
  • Improved self-esteem during dating and intimate relations

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Men who are physically healthy and maintaining a healthy weight are good candidates for male breast reduction, especially if other treatments such as exercise and weight loss have not corrected the issue.

If you are a teen and still growing, smoke marijuana, or use anabolic steroids, breast reduction surgery is not a good option, as the breast tissue may continue to enlarge after surgery. All patients should realize that by itself, breast reduction will not create a chiseled chest or pumped-up pectoral muscles.

The Gynecomastia Surgery Process

Gynecomastia surgery

Gynecomastia surgery is generally an outpatient procedure where the patient is placed under general anesthesia for their safety and comfort. That means you will have to arrange for transportation to and from the hospital on the day of surgery, as you will not be staying overnight but will be too groggy and sore to drive yourself home.

When you arrive, Dr. Tantillo will go over your surgery plan one more time, marking the areas that will be operated on and preparing you for surgery. The surgery usually takes about two hours to complete, during which you will be completely asleep and monitored by a board-certified anesthesiologist. Dr. Tantillo’s gynecomastia surgery removes the overactive male breast gland and/or liposuction of the surrounding area to remove fat in order to create a normal, flat male chest so patients enjoy improved confidence and wear the clothing they prefer.

The procedure requires an incision along the lower half of the areola and through this incision, the fat is removed using liposuction and the breast tissue through direct excision. This combination allows the chest to be as flat as possible. Surgical incisions are placed inconspicuously and scars fade over time. As a board-certified plastic surgeon who has performed thousands of successful breast surgeries, Dr. Tantillo knows the importance of minimizing scarring. While all surgery leaves scars, Dr. Tantillo can minimize their size and noticeability through clever incision placement and planning. He will also provide you with specific aftercare instructions (including scar care) to maximize the positive results of your surgery.

Gynecomastia Recovery

Male breast reduction surgery is an outpatient surgical procedure, so typically, patients return home the same day as surgery. The procedure is performed using general anesthesia for optimal results and safety, so make sure to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you overnight.

Patients leave the operating room wearing a compression garment and should wear it or a tight-fitting workout shirt, for six weeks post-surgery. The garment can be worn inconspicuously under any type of shirt. Swelling increases for approximately three days post-surgery and then decreases; almost all of the swelling is gone by six weeks. Depending on your job, you will likely return to work five to ten days after surgery; sooner if you can do some work from home. You should avoid cardio and lower body workouts for three weeks after surgery and avoid upper body workouts for six weeks after surgery. It is normal to experience tenderness in the chest area after the procedure. Patients find that the recovery following gynecomastia surgery is quite manageable. Dr. Tantillo will schedule follow-up appointments with you and make sure you are comfortable with your recovery instructions as part of your personalized surgery plan.

Gynecomastia Results

The gynecomastia results are considered permanent. However, it is important for men to maintain a stable weight after the procedure, as additional weight gain may result in the growth of fat tissue in the chest area. Patients that struggle with their weight should plan to develop a proper diet and exercise plan to prevent excess weight gain that might undo the results.

Most men simply don’t talk about body image concerns such as male chest size with friends.
